The Perfect Margarita

The Perfect Margarita

Here are two margarita recipes we recommend adding to your springtime cocktail-making arsenal—one that will impress any margarita connoisseur, and one bright, herbaceous riff for when you're just not into following any rules.

The Essentialist's Margarita

You'll need:

  • 2 oz tequila (we're big fans of using a lightly aged reposado)
  • 1.5 oz lime
  • .5 oz simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water)
  • .25 oz Cointreau (you'll want to use a quality orange liqueur, don't settle for a saccharine-sweet triple sec-- your morning self will thank you)
  • pinch of sea salt
  • .5 oz mezcal to float

Shake the first five ingredients together in a cocktail shaker. Strain into an ice-filled glass, top with a splash of mezcal for a nice smoky aroma.

Did you know that cilantro is a natural heavy-metal detoxifier? Better drink a couple.

Rosita Margarita

You'll need:

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 1 oz grapefruit juice (fresh is best)
  • .75 oz lime
  • .5 oz simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water)
  • fistful of cilantro
  • good pinch of sea salt

Give all ingredients a vigorous shake with ice. The shaking alone will bring out all of the cilantro's flavor - no need to muddle. Strain through a fine mesh sieve over fresh ice, garnish with grapefruit,
