The 13th Firing at East Fork Pottery went off without an hitch - no explosions, no collapses, no tears. Just a whole lot of sweat. Summer firings are pretty much the only time I miss the winter and the sweet relief of standing in the snow between stokes.
Saturday was a scorcher, but we had some really killer help to get it all done. Thanks so much to everyone who came out and lent a hand or kept us company last weekend!
Alex & John each took big steps out of their comfort zones this cycle by exploring new forms and surface decorations: Alex departed from his tendency toward intricate slip-work and made many pots with strong, subtle, and contemporary forms decorated very simply or not at all, while, from the other side of the workshop, John adorned some pots neck to toe with text, plants, snakes, even self-portraits and utilized an almost comical scale of size: spending as much time on cups that could sit comfortably in the palm of a child's hand as he did on pots that could hold 1,000 cups.
Slowly but surely we've become more aware of our kiln - its hot spots and its temperaments - and have begun to fire less apologetically and with a lot more fervor.
As a result, the pots from the 13th firing tell a broad, rich and tangled story of many ceramic and artistic histories and heritages. And though the seasoned eye will likely see influences from ceramic traditions near and far, this group of pots feels decidedly, confidentially East Fork.
