Freckles

Freckles

We hope you love freckles on your pottery, because our clay tends to produce a lot of them. The teensy tiny spots that dapple our bowls and mugs are not part of the glaze, but a result of the iron content in the clay body. How many pop up happens purely by chance.

Iron is a softie. It melts at a lower temperature than the rest of the elements. Within the kiln's red hot temperatures, the specks of metal liquify and shows up as tiny freckles on the surface of the pot. It's perfectly safe. And, we think, pretty charming.
